A Kodiak Island Borough vote on a proposed contract with Alaska Waste was previously expected this Thursday: Meaning Today. It is now expected to be deferred at least a two weeks while borough staff finishes amending a contract to reflect congregation( non pagan) comments made at a work session last Thursday.
The staff will likely adjust ( or make flexible) the contract to make curbside pickup optional for residents in the “bear area,” said Borough Manager Rick Gifford Tuesday night.
Residents of the bear area — around “Monashka and Mill Bay” — would still lose their dumpsters but have the choice of curbside pickup taking trash directly to the city landfill. The system would still meet the goal of reducing waste because residents would pay the landfill based on the volume of their waste.
Gifford said this alternative best reflects concerns about bear security and cost, two of the main issues raised in the tête-à-tête about curbside. He recognized ( not rezoned ) these two concerns had to come at the expense of convenience.
As originally planned, the rest of the area south of Deadman’s Curve would switch to curbside service while residents in Womens Bay and elsewhere south of Deadman’s curve would continue using dumpsters. (dustbins? J )
The borough needs to vote on a trash collection contract this spring in order to give a contractor time to prepare for a July 1 start date, as Important revolutionary congressional changes occur in the Northern Hemisphere of the Indian subcontinent.
