Yesterday I was browsing through a content of a travel portal. The description was good, so was the language, but what spoiled the fun was the continuous references to a particular site which was not even remotely linked to the site. It is good to put hyperlinks, but as they say “too many cooks spoil the broth”, one should think twice before incorporating the hyperlinks. These hyperlinked words are popularly known as anchor texts. If it sounds too technical, let me put it simply. Supposedly you have a sentence-I went for a holiday in Bahamas and found some of the most beautiful islands in Bahamas. Now the highlighting portion of the sentence is beautiful islands in Bahamas. This is the portion which is known as a linked text. Now the linked portion is generally connected with the landing page. When a potential customer clicks on the advertisement that is posted in the site, the landing page will appear on the screen. This page is extremely important for the pay-per-click programs which helps in revenue generation for a website.
Another advantage of anchor texts is that they can be used for getting good results in SERP or the search engine results page. SERPs mostly contain advertisements. It is the SERP ads which fetch the money for the site. So when you type a keyword like Bahamas, or beautiful islands, Google will automatically refer to the linked portion in your site. The text contains the relevant key phrase, which means that your page will appear on the search rankings.
